Summer in Logan Square: Cicadas and Pokemon Go
To some, this season will be remembered as the summer of Pokemon Go. A time in which youngsters and adults spent their evenings wandering around the boulevards in search of trophies from the 722 fictional species of little monsters engineered by Nintendo. As for myself, I spent my summer evenings keeping an eye out for dog-day cicada nymphs crawling out of the ground to transform into winged adults. Their resounding chime is the defining soundtrack of every Logan Square summer. This talk takes a keen look at this usually invisible, albeit very audible, insect considering the importance of modes of attention, animal representation, and environmental awareness in our everyday life. What are we bound to lose if we keep on looking in the wrong places?
