The Lillstreet Art Center is proud to present The House is Rockin’, a photographic series focused on issues of identity and femininity while questioning female stereotypes and the demand for societal standards of beauty and domesticity. The images invoke the grotesque and the sublime while exploring decay within the 21st century still-life. A dialogue is created surrounding expectations for attraction, glamour, and the concept of women’s work. These ideas are approached not to offer an excuse or answer for conventionalized behaviors, but rather as an investigation into the complexities of gendered expectations and their utilization in our culture.
