@ Learning Machine

3145 S Morgan St

Opening Saturday, May 7th, from 7PM - 10PM

On view through Saturday, May 28th

Come check out the barbaric stylings of Hanna Elliott, Charlie Walsh and Brian Rush! Paintings that will scorch your eyes! A storefront installation for feline domination! Join us for opening night or by appointment.

Hanna’s paintings employ the use of advertisements, symbols, words, and found images as source material to create systems of emotionally, sexually, spiritually, or politically charged configurations. These images however prove to be aggressive yet senseless or paradoxical, and as a result they disorient any sense of comprehension. The confounding depictions dominating the compositions serve as its own form of subliminal non-sensical advertising in order to break down the systems that construct our morality, our psychology and our social structures. Consequentially, each piece functions as an absurd and cynical glimpse into the insanity and fragility of the phenomenological experience. Beneath the more calculative decision making of each piece lies a primal sadistic force. The pieces show traces of gouging, stabbing, scratching resulting in wound-like afflictions to the surface. The wounds parallel the likes of an orifice, yet the orifices appear erotic despite their violent origin. The indication of carnal lust and violence allude to the relation between sacrifice, birth, death, and eroticism.

Brian’s work employs reclaimed materials, traditional printmaking and cast objects. His sculptural installations blend fantastical visions of the natural world with raw fragments of our constructed environment.

Special guest Charlie Walsh will have zines for sale.

Show will be open through May 28. Stop by during draw jam on Thursdays, 7-10, or email learningmachine.chi@gmail.com to make an appointment.
