Filter Photo is pleased to exhibit Nate Larson and Marni Shindelman’s work from the series Geolocation: Tributes to the Data Stream. The exhibition will take place from May 6 through May 28. On Friday, May 6 there will be an opening reception from 6-9 pm, and copies of the book that accompanies the exhibition will be available for purchase.
Nate Larson and Marni Shindelman use publicly available embedded GPS information in Twitter updates to track the locations of user posts and make photographs to mark the location in the real world. Each of these photographs is taken on the site of the update and paired with the originating text. Larson and Shindelman’s act of making a photograph anchors and memorializes the ephemeral online data in the real world and also probes the expectations of privacy surrounding social networks. Their collaborative work is a means for situating this virtual communication in the physical realm. They imagine themselves as virtual flâneurs, ethnographers of the Internet, exploring cities 140 characters at a time through the lives of others.
Flash Power Projects has recently published Geolocation: Tributes to the Data Stream with photographs by Nate Larson and Marni Shindelman, texts by Kate Palmer Albers, Jamie Allen, Chad Alligood, Julia Dolan, Mark Alice Durant, Paul Soulellis, Michael Wolf, and Natalie Zelt.
Filter Photo is proud to acknowledge the support of the David C. & Sarajean Ruttenberg Arts Foundation in producing this exhibition.
