Josef Strau: The New World, Application for Treasure Island
@ The Renaissance Society
5811 S. Ellis Avenue, Chicago, IL 60637
Opening Sunday, September 21st, from 4PM - 7PM
On view through Sunday, November 9th
Strau’s work mines the interplay between language, form, and environment, resulting in concise and highly symbolic sculptural installations. These are intimately related to, and often feature, his characteristic stream-of-consciousness writing, which merges the diaristic, the theoretical, and the fictional. At the Renaissance Society, the artist’s first solo exhibition in a US museum, Strau presents work recently produced in Mexico City that reflects on his experience of arriving in the Americas.
Strau discusses his work and wider practice with the show’s curator, Solveig Øvstebø, at 5pm. This talk takes place in Kent Hall, Room 120, which is a short walk from the Renaissance Society.
This event is free, and all are welcome.
