D Gallery is pleased to present Wish List, a solo exhibition of Emily Lanctot. For the past several years Lanctot has mined public wish lists on Amazon including those of family, friends, mentors and colleagues. Some of the lists are extensive and organized; others contain only a single but sometimes telling item. Lanctot transposes the lists onto simple white canvases by hand lettering each item in black paint. Regardless of the users intentions when creating the wish list, the paintings become portraits based on basic consumer desires and impulses.
Emily Lanctot received a B.F.A. in Drawing and Painting from Northern Michigan University in 2008, and an M.F.A. in Interdisciplinary Studio Arts from Vermont College of Fine Arts in 2010. She has exhibited at the DeVos Art Museum (Marquette, Michigan), Whipple Fine Art Gallery (Rosenburg, Oregon), Julian Scott Memorial Gallery (Johnson, Vermont), Oasis Gallery (Marquette, Michigan) and Copper Country Community Arts Center (Hancock, Michigan) She lives and work in Marquette, Michigan, where she is Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Art and Design at Northern Michigan University.
The exhibition is guest-curated by Melissa Matuscak, Director and Curator at the DeVos Art Museum at Northern Michigan University. A reception will be held on Thursday, September 18 from 11:45am – 12:45 pm; both the artist and curator will be present.
