Bruce Moffat: The Chicago Freight Tunnels (Lecture)

We are excited to inaugurate the MAS Context 2014 Fall Talks with Bruce G. Moffat. The lecture will take place on Tuesday, September 2 at the Charnley-Persky House, headquarters of the Society of Architectural Historians.
Moffat is a transportation enthusiast with many years of service at the Chicago Transit Authority and is the author of several books about Chicago’s transportation, including Forty Feet Below: The Story of Chicago’s Freight Tunnels (Interurban Pr, 1982), The Chicago Tunnel Story: Exploring the Railroad “Forty Feet Below” (CERA B-135, 2002), and The “L”: The Development of Chicago’s Rapid Transit System, 1888-1932 (CERA B-131, 1995). He is co-author, with Michael Williams and Richard Cahan, of Chicago: City on the Move (Cityfiles Press, 2007)
In his talk, he will discuss the history of the Chicago Freight tunnels, a system he visited several times and a topic he covered for the Network issue of MAS Context.
The event will take place at the Charnley-Persky House, the international headquarters of the Society of Architectural Historians. The National Historic Landmark, designed by Adler and Sullivan at the time that Frank Lloyd Wright was a draftsman in their office, is internationally recognized as a turning point in modern residential architecture.
