That we are all in love with the game of catch, release. Two hands outstretched as if receiving a body. Passing it back.

Again. It becomes necessary to practice such things. To nail and keep nailing. We are nothing if not consistent creatures. Count our steps. Four Mississippis until one man sacks the other. The magic number of ten thousand. Hours until we are an expert at anything. Catching. Nailing. The ritual of putting on one sock, then the other. In this way, we are all the same. The hand that pulls the elastic band, traces the arc of the ass. Its perfect pitch. The hand that pulls a curtain shut.

It becomes necessary to practice monotony, sex, sports. The faces we make. Necessary to assign each a value. The hand tracing a dollar sign. This life is worth this much. This ass, certainly more. This look is priceless. Mississippi too. What we won’t pay for the perfect pause. Necessary to say the full word to make the second count. The arc of the lower lip as it meets the top. Makes the pass. We are nothing if not always passing.

Strauss Bourque-LaFrance (b. 1983, Poland Spring, Maine) lives and works in New York City. He received his BA from Hampshire College in 2006, MFA from Tyler School of Art in 2010 and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Skowhegan ME. His work has been included in exhibitions at; Vox Populi, Philadelphia, PA; Sculpture Center, New York, NY; Bodega, Philadelphia, PA; Airplane, New York, NY; Clifford Gallery, Hamilton, NY among others. SBLAF’s performance work has been shown at Socrates Sculpture Park, Queens, NY; Dixon Place, New York, NY; Movement Research at the Judson Church, New York, NY and Space 1026, Philadelphia, PA. He is currently an Artist in Residence at Movement Research.
