“Brazen … instrumental to not only Chicago’s comics scene but the larger arts community”
– Chicago Artist Writers

BRAIN FRAME is a series of performative comix readings. It’s a bimonthly opportunity for sequential artists to expand upon their work, adding elements and atmosphere impossible to reproduce on a printed page. BRAIN FRAME emphasizes experimentation and ambition, and welcomes creative risk, even when it fails. Readings often include slideshows, soundtracks, costumes, lectures, props, and/or more. Every show features six readings, ranging from the hilarious to the heartbreaking to the avant-garde.

BRAIN FRAME 9 boasts two performances from abroad, a first for the series. Jeremy Tinder, co-founder of Trubble Club and author of Elephant Ear, will be Skyping in, and Marnie Galloway, artist and owner of Monkey-Rope Press, will present a giant pop-up book via surrogate and pre-recorded video. Also performing will be David Alvarado, Ben Bertin, Corinne Mucha, and Gina Wynbrandt. A limited edition screen print of the BRAIN FRAME 9 poster, designed by Lyra Hill, BRAIN FRAME founder and organizer, and Joe Tallarico, artist and comics editor for Lumpen, will be available for sale, as well as comics, zines, and whatever else the readers care to hawk.

Now in its second year, BRAIN FRAME continues to evolve. Increasingly, Hill is able to pay performers and crew, and rent better equipment. “I want people to surprise me, and I want to understand good comics from the artists’ perspectives,” she told Gapers Block in July, “It’s a DIY no-budget event, but it’s fastidiously crafted.”
