Tie Dyes on the Sunrise
@ The Bike Room
1109 W. Northshore, Chicago IL
Opening Saturday, October 8th, from 4PM - 7PM
On view through Saturday, November 12th
The Bike Room invites you to Tie Dyes on the Sunrise, a solo exhibition featuring new work by Karolina Gnatowski. Gnatowski creates physically rich, bodily works that operate through a psychedelic lens turning textures, colors and woven structures into wall-hung protagonists and other strange characters. Working against the backdrop of such craft traditions as the Bauhaus, Gnatowski confronts these ideals through surface embellishment and pop culture iconography from the 1960s and 70s. Playing with combinations of imagery, affects and handicraft sensibilities from these great utopian failures, she assesses available values and meanings in the contemporary landscape.
Gnatowski received her MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Fiber and Material Studies in 2007. She has exhibited at The Dock 6 Collective, The Poor Farm, MDW Fair with The Suburban and SideCar Gallery, SPOKE, LivingRoom Gallery, Hyde Park Art Center, Northern Illinois University, Lollapalooza in Grant Park and Arsenal Gallery in Bialystok, Poland. She currently serves as faculty for the Fiber and Material Studies department at SAIC.
