Ruth Root and Miranda Lichtenstein
@ The Suburban
125 N Harvey Ave, Oak Park, IL 60302
Opening Sunday, February 27th, from 2PM - 4PM
On view through Monday, April 25th
New York-based Miranda Lichtenstein and Ruth Root are stepping out of the usual and into the experimental for their projects at The Suburban. Root will exhibit a break from the self-conscious enamel on aluminum paintings exploring color block abstractions with new drawings on draped fabric. These works exhibit a fresh color vocabulary and new arrangements of irregularly sized shapes, curves and sharp edges. The fabric holds the drawing on the wall and might even participate in the drawing itself.
Lichtenstein persists in her investigation of out of body experience with the installation of a new iteration of her video, Danse Serpentine (doubled and refracted). Considering that the work will be shown in a room that has no windows and is long and narrow, this version includes a Mylar screen where the video can be viewed up close and a refracted version that will be projected onto the opposite wall. The artist said she is experimenting with the source material from her original video—something she would not normally reveal. “It’s fairly layered, in terms of material, but also emphasizes color, which made sense in relation to Ruth’s work.”
