Ever conscious of the beholder, Lindsay Lawson investigates cogent modes for presentation in her work. Here for American Smooth, she navigates the relationship of past and present through the immersive properties of sound and screen. This two-room video installation utilizes the sway of song in order to blur two previously distinct works—Das Ding and A. Trio. The song in question, “Unchained Melody” by The Righteous Brothers, is in fact the sound component to the featured digital animation Das Ding. Allowed to play over the entire space, it mingles remarkably if not inadvertently, with A. Trio, a video projection citing modern dancer Yvonne Rainer in her performance of Trio A in 1965. Together these works, which not only share a romantic connection to the 1960’s, but also common ties to the body, absence, and form, assert that meaning is never fixed, but continually rendered malleable by the present.
